South of Dupont Circle - National Geographic & Borders

Tuesday, September 14th, 2004

The National Geographic Tornado exhibit isn’t primarily photography. Yes, there are some photos, but they are eclipsed by the really tall tornado simulator. Press the red button, and while you wait for it to spin up, walk down the hallway toward the ticket counter and see some great images of volcanoes by Carsten Peter, then buy your tickets to the Fall series of photography lectures. I’m going on 10/6 (Faces of Africa) and 11/4 (National Gepgraphic’s Greatest Portraits). Don’t forget to stick your hand in the simulator on your way out - it’ll suck your fingernails off. Really.

The Borders on 18th and L has remaindered copies of Arms Against Fury - Magnum Photographers in Afghanistan for six bucks or so. This is a good book - photographers including Steve McCurry, Luc Delahaye, Raymond Depardon, and Susan Meiselas have years of history there, so it gives some insight into the place from before it became news here. They had maybe 6 copies left, so stop after work tonight.
