Provisions Library War Photography exhibit

Thursday, June 23rd, 2005

The Provisions Library is just about to close (6/26) their On the Subject of WAR photo exhibit. I’d never been to this space - hadn’t even heard of it until recently. Very cool exposed brick and glass space for the library, and little nooks and side rooms for reading and research. The exhibit is good - powerful images from work you’ve probably seen elsewhere, including Nina Berman’s images of injured soldiers back home from Iraq, Susan Meiselas’ work, Ron Haviv of VII, and others. This was a better exhibit than I was expecting, although there wasn’t much depth in any one area. The have a video installation of Ron Haviv’s work, projected on a large screen. This works better than the installations at the Transformer Gallery, since they are easy to see (no glare), higher quality, and there is actually a place to sit - they show films on Wednesday nights, so it is all set up.

If you want to sit down in a quiet space with war photography books from photographers like Capa, Nachtwey and Haviv this is a great spot - I’m sure I’ll be spending an afternoon there sometime soon.

Gabriela Bulisova - done at Fraser, catch her in Arlington

Thursday, June 16th, 2005

Stopped by Gabriela Bulisova’s exhibit at the Fraser Gallery in Georgetown about an hour before it closed for good yesterday. I was particularly impressed with a couple of the images, including one of children in an orphanage peeking out the window and another of a young boy wearing an old Soviet uniform with waaaaay too many cheap looking medals on it. Very good. The text seemed a bit over the top at times, as if it assumed too much - did the photographer really check the facts in these captions? Does she really know where the chickens on the butcher’s table came from? The captions could have been much tighter with the specifics in the images - I thought some were too general, and made a statement far beyond the scope of what I was seeing, which took away from the power that the photos could have conveyed with better text describing them.

I thought Ms. Bulisova might be the same person as KidOfSpeed, but not so. The show is over at the Fraser, but you can catch her Living with Chernobyl exhibit at the Arlington Arts Center until July 9. I belive it is a different set of images, but I’m not certain.

Transformer Gallery: We Could Be Heroes

Monday, June 13th, 2005

Wow - this is a small tiny little gallery! Very cute - there is a loft for the office, and a white space about the size of my apartment living room for the exhibits on the main floor. Went to their current show on Saturday, and was disappointed. It isn’t really a photography exhibit - it is two televisions set up displaying pictures on a preset cycle, along with a few other exhibits. Seeing the size of the space, it would be difficult to display much in a traditional format, but the video approach leaves me cold. Yes, they were photographs, and yes, many that I saw were quite good, but the display quality was worse than what I can see on my monitor at home in a more comfortable setting. I’m not sure what going to the gallery added here.

Really good - Shomei Tomatsu @ Corcoran

Friday, June 10th, 2005

The Corcoran has a number of photography exhibits up right now. The Biennial has some photography, but none of it got me really excited. The Eyes of History is pretty good - some disturbing images, some very high quality. I’ve commented in the past that digital can get really unpleasant at large sizes, and this exhibit is no exception. Most journalists appear to shoot JPEG images, and the artifacts get pretty nasty.

But Shomei Tomatsu: Skin of the Nation really took the cake. Fortunately, this show runs for another couple of months, so you have plenty of time to go see it. It is a wide ranging, 250 image exhibit of images from post-war Japan. B&W, color, sad, happy, crisp, vague, and overwhelming. This was a real treat, and you shouldn’t miss it. Washington Post review here.
