DC area photo blogs/websites

Monday, August 15th, 2005

Art DC has had so many photography tips & techniques posts that photography has been broken out into its own section. James Bailey, who writes more than I could probably read in a lifetime, has started Black Cat Bone. JT Kirkland frequently writes about photography in the DC area on Thinking About Art. Angst Babe (Tracy Lee) (not safe for work) is a good read, especially if you’re interested in graduate photography programs around DC. And of course, Lenny is a concise, prolific voice on the DC art scene at DC Art News.

Irving Penn at the National Gallery

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

The new photography exhibit space at the National Gallery is really nice. Until October 2, it is showing Irving Penn: Platinum Prints. The man was obsessed with getting better prints, and scoured old publicatinos for information on how to do platinum printing. He then developed his own set of techniques involving a witch’s brew of different chemicals and procedures, including exposing the print multiple times with different development to get a richer tone. The exhibit has one of his sheets of notes describing the process of creating one of the prints. If they were this anal-retentive at NASA, we’d be launching shuttles every other day with no worries.

But the real question is whether it was worth all that time and effort. Although I do think it was obsessive, the results are really incredible. There is a book that goes with the exhibit, and looking at the high quality reproductions in the book vs. the actual prints hanging shows what a big difference there really is - the prints are luminous, with unbelievably rich tones. The book’s reproductions look flat in comparison.

Photographically, the portraits are very strong. I particularly like the minimal distractions found in the photographs taken in a sharply angled corner of his studio. I’m less excited about the still-life images of street trash. The collages are ok as well, but the portraits really do steal the show. Plenty of time left to go see this one!
