Caponigro at American History Museum

Monday, September 12th, 2005

This is almost too small to be called an exhibit - it is kind of in the hallway outside the larger photography space on the 3rd floor, and I didn’t even notice it at first. Divided into two parts, the left half shows the buildup of a sea/clouds series, playing with the effects of space. More traditional single prints of nature scenes appear on the righthand side. Overall, pleasing - the blue tones and cotton-white clouds in the first series are beautifully clean and simple. Too much nature photography goes over the top - gaudy colors, hummingbirds printed bigger than your head, and so on. This is the opposite - soothing yet interesting, in a small format that makes them look like jewels.

It is probably not worth a trip downtown and the frisking at the door just for this exhibit. But if you’re passing by, take a moment here - for some reason, it has been sticking in my mind since I saw it. I almost want to go back for another look, and probably will if I’m down on the Mall again.
