Two exhibit comments

Friday, November 25th, 2005

Too much turkey yesterday to do the weekly update - hope you had a good Thanksgiving as well. Instead, some comments on two current exhibits.

Stopped by the opening for Mark Sincevich’s “This is My Place” last week. Well attended, with live music and quite good food. Some of the photographs were solid, including scenes from Italy and some Paris black&white images. Overall quality was spotty, however. Culling out the bottom quarter of the images would have made the presentation stronger. For example, a shot of a boat in Croatia was blown up far past the quality of the shot allowed, resulting in unappealing grain and color - no need to include this in the exhibit. More successful images didn’t have this flaw, especially those with very strong color. I’m not sure if they were manipulated, but some of the blue skies were just incredibly deep. If you like travel photography, this exhibit is worth a quick look, but it lacks punch.

“Sudan: The Land and the People” at the Meridian International Center is really good. I couldn’t see all of the images since a meeting was in progress in one of the rooms, but this is definitely worth going to if you like “decisive moment” photography. It is clear that Michael Freeman spent a great deal of time and effort getting these images. There is an action in the images, such as catching salt nuggets flying through the air as a man scrapes them from the ground, that makes this a very dynamic exhibit. It really feels alive. Definitely worth stopping for this one. I stopped by outside of their normal exhibit hours, and there was no problem going through most of the show, so don’t pass it by if you’re in the area at an odd hour.

Good: Bound for Glory: America in Color, 1939-1943

Wednesday, November 9th, 2005

Been looking forward to this for a while, and it was better than I expected. It is actually jarring to see photos in color from this era, simply since there is so much B&W material that is more commonly presented. The richness of some of the prints is startling - much better than the reproductions in the brochure or online. That said, there is little of the garishness that you might expect - color for the sake of color, like the red clothes and hats gratuitously added into some of the early National Geographic color work. In fact, much of it is remarkably restrained. In some images, you really have to look to see the color, yet the limited hues do add quite a bit to the photography. Open through 11/26, so you still have time to see it.
