What’s new 4/27/06

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

Back to the regular weekly event & exhibit update, but first a couple notes from comments we received on last week’s class information. First, I overlooked the NVCC, which has photography classes. The original article has been updated with a link and a note that you don’t have to be enrolled in a degree program to take the classes. Second, The Washington Photo Safari folks wrote an article about where to go for photo ops if you’re a tourist. (Or dragging the in-laws around town…)

Photography classes around Washington, DC

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

No “what’s new” update today: Instead, lots of classes and photography education going on…if you know of others, drop us a line.

  1. The Washington School of Photography obviously offers quite a few classes.
  2. The Fraser Gallery runs a well-known “Success as an Artist” seminar about the practical side of being an artist.
  3. The Corcoran offers photography continuing education classes in addition to their degree programs.
  4. The Smithsonian Resident Associate program offers classes.
  5. The Art League in Alexandria has classes as well as exhibition opportunities.
  6. Sam D’Amico runs a variety of workshops.
  7. Colleen Henderson offers digital photography workshops.
  8. The DC ASMP chapter often has workshops and seminars, most of which are open to the general public. (For an increased fee, of course.)
  9. The Nikon School comes to the area pretty regularly.
  10. The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop has classes and darkrooms for adults and children.
  11. Glen Echo Photoworks near Bethesda has regular classes with some well-known photographers, plus portfolio reviews and workshops.
  12. Penn Camera offers mostly introductory workshops on how to use your camera, which can be free if you purchased a camera from them.
  13. The Washington Photo Safari takes you around DC for a day to take photos of the sights, guided by an instructor.
  14. The ArtDC.org forums often mention photography events and classes.
  15. The DC Photogs mailing list organizes outings to shoot in the DC area.
  16. In addition, some local photographers run one-time workshops from time to time. For example, Mark Sincevich has an upcoming workshop in Iceland.
  17. Update 4/27: Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) has a full photography program, but you don’t have to be enrolled in a degree program to take the classes. They have a Summer session as well as Fall session schedules posted.

What’s new 4/6/06

Thursday, April 6th, 2006

Was at the Natural History Museum for another exhibit, and happened to pass the “Life and Culture of the Sami Reindeer People of Norway” exhibit. This little out-of-the way area is down in the back corner of the museum, in a hallway next to the Baird auditorum. The elevators stop there. Despite the humble space, the photography I’ve seen there has always been top notch, and this was no exception. Maybe it is because you just don’t expect much from such a (frankly) crummy space, but the images are forceful and direct, with the technical execution to make them work. Worth searching this room out if you’re in the museum.
